The acquisition of Japanese compound accent rule
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper reports the results of research on the process of acquisition of Japanese compound accent rules by children aged 4-5. The results reveal: 1) Children acquire genera1 rules before they acquire lexical idiosyncratic rules. 2) Children failed to retain the accent of the second element, and instead place an incorrect accent on the penultimate foot. This result suggests that children acquire placing accent on the penultimate foot prior to retaining the lexical accent of the second element. We discussed a similarity between above result and a constraint-reranking phenomenon in adults’ phonology. 3) The syllable, which plays a important role in adults’ CA rules, does not contribute to the CA rules in children’s phonology. We assumed that children have not acquired sufficient understanding of the syllable to contribute to the CA rules.

A syllable-based generalization of Japanese accentuation
One of the major findings of the recent linguistic research on Japanese is that the syllable plays a pivotal role in a variety of phonological and morphological phenomena in the mora-based prosodic system of this language. This paper attempts to reinforce this argument by proposing a significant generalization of Japanese accentuation in terms of ‘syllable weight’, an idea that each syllable ha...
متن کاملAccent Sandhi Estimation of Tokyo Dialect of Japanese Using Conditional Random Fields
When synthesizing speech from Japanese text, correct assignment of accent nuclei for input text with arbitrary contents is indispensable in obtaining naturally-sounding synthetic speech. A phenomenon called accent sandhi occurs in utterances of Japanese; when a word is uttered in a sentence, its accent nucleus may change depending on the contexts of preceding/succeeding words. This paper descri...
متن کاملAccent and beat matching: The correspondence of English stress and Japanese pitch in terms of textsetting
This study investigates the relation between speech accent and musical beat in two languages of different accent types. ‘Accent’ is intended to refer to any type of prominence: stress in English and pitch in Japanese. Previous studies on English textsetting indicate a rather strong matching of linguistic accents and musical beat strength. In L2 acquisition, Japanese learners of English tend to ...
متن کاملPerception of lexical pitch-accent by Korean Learners of Japanese
Tokyo Japanese has a lexical pitch-accent system whereas Seoul Korean features no wordlevel tonal representations. The present study investigated phonological perception of lexical pitch-accent by advanced Seoul Korean learners of Japanese, via sequence-recall experiments. The results, on the contrary to our prediction, showed that advanced Korean learners performed as well as native Japanese s...
متن کاملThe Cognitive Unit of Segmentation for Speech in Japanese
We performed a cognitive experiment in order to obtain evidence that prosody is used for the segmentation of continuous speech for understanding in real time. We assume that the cognitive unit in Japanese speech is the accentual phrase (AP) which is represented by low and high pitch patterns according to the Japanese accent rule. Meaningless speech which consisted of two APs was used as the exp...
